ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Guest columnist Jeff Pierson argued that the rapid spread of wind and solar projects in southern Idaho has led to soil compaction and weakened groundwater recharge — posing long-term risks to local farmland and the Eastern Snake River Plain Aquifer. He said Jerome County’s outdated zoning laws allow modern industrial projects to proceed with limited oversight — a gap that could affect the region’s future.  Pocatello-Chubbuck Observer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pocatello Regional Airport has been collecting donations to help TSA employees who have not received pay during the ongoing federal shutdown — the terminal lobby accepts food, household supplies and eligible gift cards every day from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.  Pocatello-Chubbuck Observer
  • Idaho Fish and Game said pen-raised pheasants have been stocked on wildlife management areas since September and will continue through December — nearly 29,000 birds will be released statewide as hunters follow the established rules for take limits and permit validation.  Pocatello-Chubbuck Observer

HEALTH NEWS

  • Governor Brad Little announced that on November 6 the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare submitted its application for the Rural Health Transformation Program to seek up to $1 billion over five years for rural healthcare, and officials—along with state leaders, tribes, and stakeholders—developed five key initiatives to improve access, quality of care, and workforce training; funding details will be announced by December 31.   Pocatello-Chubbuck Observer
