COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new nonprofit called Rise and Respond Foundation launched in Pocatello to honor first responders and their families by providing scholarships for law enforcement and faith-driven students. A community celebration took place Tuesday evening with food, live music by Layne Bowen — a ribbon cutting — and a raffle drawing to raise funds.  KPVI
  • The Pocatello Free Clinic is asking for volunteers for its 8th annual Rake a Difference fundraiser to raise funds by raking lawns in exchange for local donations. Volunteer teams will work on November 7 and 14 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.—and on November 8 and 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  KPVI

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Pocatello’s new discount store It’s Bin Fun opened on September 5 on Yellowstone Avenue next to Mandarin House, and it is owned by engineers Aaron and Tallie Russell. The store sells returned and overstock items in bins with prices changing daily from $9 to $1—providing a unique treasure hunt for shoppers.  East Idaho News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alyse Maksimoski, a post-doctoral associate at Idaho State University, was awarded a National Science Foundation fellowship to study the blue band goby and build a post-doctoral research community across Idaho—she received a $270,000 grant for her biology work yesterday.  KPVI
  • ISU's School of Performing Arts is hosting high school musicians from Idaho, Utah and Nevada for the Mountain West Marching Band Invitational this weekend—participants will perform and compete during the event.  Idaho State Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A University of Idaho Extension trial is showing promise by allowing Central Idaho farmers to grow two forage crops on a single field. Researchers will continue the study to evaluate long-term benefits and practical strategies for crop diversification.  Post Register

FINANCE NEWS

  • AAA reported that gas prices in Idaho reached $3.46 per gallon—a penny lower than last week—and falling crude oil prices plus cooler temperatures may bring more savings soon.  KPVI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Pocatello released its Road Construction and Traffic Report for the week of October 13, noting that street sweeping, milling on Pocatello Creek Rd, and patching across the city have led to lane closures and detours as crews repaint crosswalks and arrows. The report also details water mainline work on S. Arthur Ave (6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Mon-Thu) and a sign replacement on E. Alameda Rd, and a street music festival on Saturday, October 18 will close parts of E. Center St, so drivers should use alternate routes.  Pocatello-Chubbuck Observer

HEALTH NEWS

  • State officials today reported that planned Medicaid cuts could force some disability care providers to close—officials said the state will exempt selected services to lessen the impact on care.  Idaho State Journal
