COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At the ICCU dome at Idaho State University, community members and first responders climbed 110 flights of stairs to honor 9/11 heroes—firefighters from Fort Hall and North Bannock took on the challenge in full gear while others prepared care kits and blankets for local veterans to be shared in November.  Local News 8
  • The Red Cross of Idaho and East Oregon urged local families to prepare for National Preparedness Month by gathering food, water, and medicine—planning safe escape routes and organizing important records—so they are ready in case of an emergency.  KPVI

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Off the Rails Brewing in Historic Downtown Pocatello is expanding its space to provide a more intimate setting for private events. Justin Arias said they will complete the project by November + the new area will accommodate larger party gatherings.  KPVI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Idaho State University started a choir program at Pocatello Women’s Correctional Center led by Dr. Jeff Francom. The program holds rehearsals every Sunday (dividing members into experienced and new groups) and involves student volunteers to share music and hope.  KPVI
  • A local professor known for his Bigfoot research died from a brief battle with brain cancer on September 11 — his family said he passed with his loved ones at his side after teaching anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University since 1993.  East Idaho News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Idaho Fish and Game issued a salvage order for Jensen Grove Pond at Jensen Grove Park in Blackfoot effective Sep. 8 through Oct. 15 to let anglers harvest fish by any method except using firearms, explosives, chemicals, electric current, or prohibited baits—fishing licenses are still required as dropping water levels mean the remaining fish may not survive.  Pocatello-Chubbuck Observer
  • Idaho Fish and Game reminds visitors to protect Edson Fichter Nature Area by following posted guidelines while enjoying the space. The agency and local volunteers ask the public to leash pets, pick up trash, and leave wildflowers for bees—keeping the area safe for everyone.  Local News 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Idaho State Police promoted Lt. Jason Horst to captain on Sept. 11 to mark a significant milestone in his career since he joined the force in 2006 after serving in the Air Force during the Sept. 11 attacks — his new role will let him oversee statewide investigations, hiring, Project Safe Neighborhood, and asset forfeitures.  East Idaho News
  • Former council member Steve Brown, who is running for mayor, held an informational meeting Thursday night and presented a plan with eight priority strategies—focusing on improved ties with Chubbuck, Bannock County, and the Shoshone-Bannock Tribe—to ensure residents are heard. He said his plan aims to build trust ahead of the mayoral election on Tuesday, November 4.  KPVI

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Please Just Stay campaign returned for its third year to support mental health and suicide prevention in Pocatello during National Suicide Prevention Month. It kicked off on September 3 and placed signs at businesses, city buildings, and homes to encourage open talks—prompting neighbors to check in on one another.  Local News 8
