Hogan invented a safety device in 1912 that was designed to prevent locomotive boiler explosions, with his patent filed in 1911 after working in local machine shops. In 1976, two separate plane crashes near American Falls and Moreland killed five people—mechanical failures caused one plane to hit power lines and forced another to crash into a grain field.
