COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pocatello will host the Lights the Wells event at Downtown Lookout Point on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m.—the celebration shows how local funds helped build solar-powered wells for the Ukrainian community in Novovorontsovka. Organizer Lena Contor will travel next week to Ukraine to deliver aid as residents enjoy music, treats, and opportunities to donate for future projects.  East Idaho News

CRIME NEWS

  • At approximately 11 pm Tuesday, Bingham County Deputies fatally shot a suspect near 1100 E. and 1300 N. east of Shelley after a local homeowner was wounded during an attempted ATV theft—officials said.  Idaho State Journal
  • In Shelley on August 20th at 11 p.m., deputies shot and fatally injured Talon Sessions, 35, of Thayne after he reportedly tried to steal a 4-wheeler — a homeowner was also injured and authorities are now investigating the incident with the East Idaho Critical Incident Team while no officers were hurt.  East Idaho News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Heidi and McKayla Russell returned to Pocatello from Japan after winning the World Cosplay Championship with their detailed Fire Emblem costumes—making them the first Americans to win in an event with competitors from over forty countries. Their family helped with the costumes and a welcoming yard display, and the sisters will later serve as judges at next year's competition.  KPVI
  • The annual Greek Festival is set for Saturday at the Greek Orthodox Church in Pocatello and will feature Greek food, music, pastries and dance performances along with tours of the historic church. Father Constantine Zozos said funds raised will go toward restoration efforts—such as adding a commercial kitchen and updating the social hall.  KPVI

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Fred Meyer pharmacy in Pocatello is offering immunizations for the flu, MMR, hepatitis, and meningitis as children head back to school. The pharmacy provides shots to kids age 6 and older without a prescription and without an appointment—it is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  KPVI
