COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Idaho Food Bank launched its Back to School campaign today to raise money and awareness for its school-year food programs. The organization’s School Pantry gives food and toiletries to students while its Backpack program, which supplied 68,000 backpacks last year, is now accepting donations from local sites + community members.  Local News 8
  • Downtown Pocatello is hosting an event called Light and Life to celebrate a grant ($27K) that helped restore clean drinking water for a rural Ukrainian community devastated by the Russian invasion in 2022. Local residents and European organizations are supporting the effort and plan to continue providing essential help to the community.  Idaho State Journal

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire gutted much of a south Pocatello home on Tuesday—residents evacuated safely with their dogs and pet lizard before flames destroyed the residence.  Idaho State Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • A Chubbuck man, 38-year-old Isiah Apodaca, was charged with felony domestic battery after allegedly beating and strangling a woman at Motel 6 on W. Burnside Ave Monday night—prompting officers from multiple agencies to respond while the victim was taken to Portneuf Medical Center and Apodaca faced additional charges for resisting arrest and an outstanding warrant for a marijuana offense.  Local News 8
  • Police arrested a man on multiple charges after a standoff at a motel in Chubbuck—officials said the investigation is ongoing.  Idaho State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Blad now leads the FY26 budget process after the city lost its third CFO in less than five years, using budget cuts and extra fund reserves to cover a $1.3M deficit while rising salary and insurance costs add pressure. The Council will vote on the final budget on August 21st—experts warn using one-time funds for regular costs may harm the city’s long-term financial health.  Pocatello-Chubbuck Observer
  • Rep. Rick Cheatum announced on Tuesday he will not seek reelection to the Pocatello City Council after eight years of service—voters will choose his replacement in November—and he will run for reelection to the Idaho House in November 2026.  East Idaho News

  • At the ICCU Dome, head coach Cody Hawkins announced that junior Jordan Cooke will start as quarterback for the Bengals in their Week 0 game at UNLV after a scrimmage on Saturday, and new defensive coordinator Grant Duff said his aggressive strategy will aim to force turnovers—his approach may boost defense ahead of the Aug. 23 game in Las Vegas.  East Idaho News
