COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Word of Life Church, led by Pastor Marty Carr, is launching in Pocatello and will hold its first service on Saturday, June 8 at 10 a.m. in the Mountain Scout Conference Room at the Holiday Inn Express on 200 Via Venitio to welcome everyone.  East Idaho News
  • The My World Discovery Museum and Museum of Clean will host their second annual Touch-A-Truck event on Tuesday, June 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. at 711 S 2nd Ave where roads will be closed for displays of emergency, construction and race vehicles plus a car show by the Pocatello Car Club, food trucks and a construction station for kids with supplies from Idaho Materials.  Local News 8

CRIME NEWS

  • On May 29 at roughly 6:19 a.m., Pocatello Police responded to a domestic disturbance near 1730 West Quinn Avenue and evacuated a woman and three children as 40 year old Logan Smith, who was armed with a gun and machete, barricaded himself in the home—after lengthy negotiations he surrendered and was arrested on three counts of aggravated assault with the area cleared and no injuries reported.  Pocatello-Chubbuck Observer
  • Pocatello police are managing an ongoing standoff with a man at a north Pocatello mobile home park that has led to evacuations and SWAT team deployment — authorities say the situation remains under investigation.  Idaho State Journal
  • Blackfoot — Idaho State Police found 27-year-old Venezuelan Alexander Jose Duran Pirela dead from gunshot wounds on Feb. 28 at 10:24 p.m. near mile marker 85 on I-15, and a Utah man, Joaquin Jose Mendoza Gonzalez, 37, was charged with second-degree murder with a deadly weapon enhancement and is set to appear in court on June 5 at 8:30 a.m.  East Idaho News
  • A man was arrested after a lengthy police standoff on Thursday at a residence on West Quinn Avenue—40-year-old Logan Smith barricaded himself with a woman and three children inside following a domestic disturbance, and after safe evacuations and negotiations, officers arrested him on three counts of aggravated assault.  East Idaho News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washington Elementary closed its doors for good on May 29 after 100 years, with its final graduating fifth graders and other students saying goodbye at 226 South 10th Avenue. Students were reassigned to Greenacres and Indian Hills Elementary Schools—future plans for the historic building remain undecided.  East Idaho News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Pocatello Water Department will begin its annual water system flush on June 2 and it will take about three weeks to complete. Residents may notice temporary low water pressure and discolored water during the process — avoid using tap water near flushing crews.  Local News 8
  • Construction on East Oak Street in front of Greenacres Elementary School will begin the second week of June to improve child pedestrian safety—workers will replace asphalt, sidewalks, curbs, gutters and add curb ramps and speed flashing beacons. The project is funded by a $250,000 grant and will maintain pedestrian access while it finishes by the end of summer.  Local News 8
