COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jenifer Reader of UI Extension in Bannock formed the Eastern Idaho Food Security Coalition with the Idaho Food Bank to connect educators and food distributors to fight hunger in eastern Idaho. The coalition was started amid SNAP changes and now funds grants to strengthen local food resources.  East Idaho News
  • A local scout organizes a youth-led Memorial Day ceremony on Friday at 6 p.m. at the Century High School Soccer Field, where Adam Hibbert (of Troop 370 at Pocatello Community Charter School) will lead invocations, flag ceremonies, and patriotic presentations.  KPVI
  • ICCU Splashpad at OK Ward Park will open for the season Saturday, May 23, as announced Tuesday by the Pocatello Parks & Recreation Department. Families can enjoy a safe water play area at the park.  Idaho State Journal
  • Officials at Pocatello's Outdoor Recreation and IMBA have released a draft trails plan for City Creek to address erosion and improve outdoor recreation; residents can review and comment online by May 28 at 5 p.m. and attend a meeting on June 1 at City Council Chambers — protecting 3,000 acres.  Pocatello-Chubbuck Observer
  • The Museum of Clean and My World Discovery Museum hosts its third Touch-A-Truck event on June 9th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Attendees can explore trucks, heavy equipment, an obstacle course, and a car show, with Portneuf Air Rescue planning a helicopter flyover at 6:00 p.m.  KPVI
  • The 5th annual Rally in the Alley bowling fundraiser raised $16,720 for Family Services Alliance — which supports survivors of domestic abuse — and over five years has collected more than $45,000 for the cause.  KPVI

CULTURE NEWS

  • John B. Herrington, the first Native American astronaut, visited the Shoshone-Bannock Hotel and Event Center yesterday and spoke with local students about his historic space flight on Endeavor + his three spacewalks.  Local News 8
  • Jason Bonham will perform his Led Zeppelin evening on August 13 at Portneuf Health Trust Amphitheater in Pocatello. Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10 a.m.  KPVI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Idaho State University’s Department of Biological Sciences welcomes locals for the Bengal Bio Open House on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. The event (featuring lab tours and hands on activities) is free and open to the public.  KPVI

  • A new weather service report finds that drought conditions are worsening in East Idaho as mountain snowpack hits record lows — officials warn of an early wildfire season that may bring water shortages and agricultural challenges later this summer.  Idaho State Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Portneuf Cancer Center has entered a new affiliation with Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah to broaden clinical trials + specialized care for patients in Southeast Idaho. The partnership will enhance treatment options for the local community.  Idaho State Journal
