COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Over 100 people and local leaders gathered last week at the Portneuf Valley Technical Education and Career Campus for its grand opening as Principal Rhonda Naftz cut the ribbon to start new career technical classes. The school, which once was a vacant call center, now offers courses in first responder work, health, business, welding, computer programming, and broadcasting for local high school students.  East Idaho News
  • The Zonta Club of Pocatello will soon offer ISU scholarships to local women + raise awareness of sexual and domestic violence and collect donations for necessities. Its 30+ members host regular events to support local women and girls.  Local News 8

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Idaho State Police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle collision on US20 near Henry’s Lake on May 1 that killed seven people—six van occupants and one pickup driver—while responders treated 16 injured and worked to clear the roadway.  Pocatello-Chubbuck Observer
  • Over 600 Idaho Power customers in north Pocatello lost power for about an hour Monday evening after a power pole caught fire—crews responded quickly to restore service.  Idaho State Journal

  • Maddie Giesbrecht—owner of Farm Fresh Farmstand—opened her 24/7 front-yard stand at 702 West Chubbuck Road to offer fresh eggs, produce, and artisan goods from April through October. The stand accepts cash or Venmo and uses security cameras to help keep the site safe while local vendors join the effort.  East Idaho News
  • Molinelli’s Jewelers in downtown Pocatello has continued its tradition—operating since 1903 and keeping its vintage charm through steady family leadership. Now managed by Carole and Gage Barker, the store still offers a hands-on experience for couples choosing diamond rings and sources gemstones from around the world.  East Idaho News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Power County’s Sixth Judicial District Magistrates Commission will appoint a new magistrate judge after Judge Paul Laggis retires on July 31, and evaluation forms for multiple applicants are available at the Trial Court Administrator’s Office on E. Center in Pocatello until May 26 at 5 p.m.—attorneys statewide are encouraged to provide input via these forms.  East Idaho News
  • The City of Pocatello calendar lists meetings from May 5 to May 9: yesterday’s USFS Open House was at 4 p.m. in Council Chambers, today there is a Site Plan Review at 1:30 in the Iwamizawa Conference Room followed by an Umpires Meeting at 5 p.m. and a Pocatello Arts Council Meeting at 6:30 in Council Chambers, and later this week the Historic Preservation Commission meets at 6 p.m. on Wednesday and City Council holds a work session at 9 a.m. on Thursday with no meetings set for Friday.  Pocatello-Chubbuck Observer
