COMMUNITY NEWS

  • An interfaith community is launching the annual Feeding the 5,000 food drive with a kickoff concert Saturday at a church (a starting point for donations) (in Pocatello).  Idaho State Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Kenneth Shaye Simmons, 49, of Chubbuck was sentenced to three years probation on Monday — his prison term was suspended — after a two-day trial in May 2024 found him guilty of intimidating a witness, with four of six charges dismissed before sentencing.  East Idaho News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The school district announced on Saturday, March 15th that rebuilding Highland High School will begin with construction starting Monday and a ground-breaking ceremony set for Wednesday, March 19th at noon. The project will happen in two phases—phase one ending in January 2027 with new classrooms, a gym, kitchen, cafeteria and commons area, and phase two finishing by July 2027 with a performing arts center, music and drama rooms and an outdoor courtyard.  KPVI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Brad Little signed House Bill 231 on March 13th, 2025 which raises the grocery tax credit for Idaho families to $155 per year. Lawmakers say the tax cut helps families manage higher food costs — the measure passed with strong support.  Pocatello-Chubbuck Observer
  • Idaho Governor Brad Little signed House Bill 37 on Wednesday morning to make firing squads the main method of execution — the law will take effect on July 1st, 2026 to allow time to remodel a prison facility for the new method.  KPVI
  • The city released final designs for Optimist Skatepark on Thursday morning and set a groundbreaking for March 21 at noon; construction will take 90 days this summer. Director Anne Butler said the design mixes ideas from a public meeting — including local skaters and experts — to replace the old park.  East Idaho News

  • Local business owners in Chubbuck are seeking new retail spaces since Pine Ridge Mall will close at the end of May—its owners plan to redevelop it into an outdoor shopping center—and small shops face challenges from high rents and oversized spaces, forcing them to relocate.  East Idaho News
